Earth's Timeline


Everyone knows that the Universe is expanding. As its mass expands, the material that makes up the Universe becomes diluted. If we go back in time when the Universe was just beginning to expand, all the material in the Universe was concentrated.

That concentrated material allowed the first stars to be massive. These giant stars could only survive 100 million years before going supernova. Each supernova created the elements that make up the periodic table. As the elements grew in number, rocks and planets began to form.

Long before our sun became a star, the Milky Way galaxy contained millions of stars.  Mixed in with that collection of stars were gas, dust and rock. Some of this material was swept around the outer edge of the Milky Way. Gravity collected some of this mass into many widely spaced balls, and they became larger and more massive with time. A cluster of stars was being created. Our sun would be one among many.

Tardigrades (water-dwelling, segmented animals with eight legs) were taken into low Earth orbit on the FOTON-M3 mission and for 10 days were exposed to the vacuum of space.   After they were returned to Earth, it was discovered that many of them survived and laid eggs that hatched normally, making these the only animals shown to be able to survive the vacuum of space.
